Shooting for a World Cup berth

      Le Quang Liem, World Cup

Liem hopes to earn World Cup slot at Asian competition

VietNamNet Bridge – Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem and his teammates will take part in the 2013 Asian Chess Championships that will be held in Pasay, Philippines from May 17 to 27.

This is a golden opportunity for Liem to earn an official ticket to the Men’s World Chess Cup, slated for August 10 to September 5 in Tromso, Norway, as he was unable to attend the previous qualifying tournament, the Asian Zone 3.3 Chess Championship, last January.

Hundreds of players from across Asia will compete for total prize money of US$100,000 in open, women’s and blitz categories according to the nine round Swiss system.

The top five contestants from the open competition will qualify for a place at the World Cup, and the women’s champion will make it through to the Women’s World Championships. If someone who has already qualified is among the winners, the next highest scorer will take the place.

Liem’s teammates, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Thi Thanh An, earned their places for the World Cup in Tromso earlier this year after winning their respective men’s and women’s championship titles at the Asian Zone 3.3 competition.
