World Series of College Chess results: Webster University teams tie for first place

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KSDK) – Webster University’s “A” and “B” chess teams tied for first place at the World Series of College Chess tournament at Princeton University during the Christmas break.
The tournament, formally known as the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, saw students from 44 colleges competing for the national title, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Penn State, Washington University of St. Louis and Lindenwood University.
Webster University’s “A” and “B” teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the country, respectively, entering the tournament. Webster was the first team in the tournament’s 65-year history to enter the World Series of College Chess as the top seed in the first year competing in the event.
Both Webster teams are coached by Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar, a former World and Olympiad Champion and current director of the chess institute on campus.
The top four finishers at the World Series of College Chess will advance to the College Chess Final Four in Herndon, Virginia on April 6 and April 7.
However, the rules of the College Chess Final Four state that a school can only be represented by one team in the tournament. As a result, six players will be selected from the “A” and “B” teams to represent Webster University in the competition.
The first PanAm Intercollegiate Chess Championship took place in New York in 1946. Webster University was the first team in history to enter the World Series of College Chess as the No. 1 seed in the first year competing in this event.
Webster will enter the Final Four as the #1 seed. The other three universities which also earned a berth in the Final Four include the University of Illinois, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and University of Texas in Dallas.

– Grandmaster Ray Robson, freshman
– Grandmaster Fidel Corrales Jimenez, freshman
– Grandmaster Georg Meier, sophomore
– (Alternate) Grandmaster Manuel Leon Hoyos, freshman
Webster University’s “B” team includes:
– Grandmaster Anatoly Byhkovky, junior
– Grandmaster Denes Boros, junior
– Grandmaster Andre Diamant, sophomore
– International Master Vitaly Neimer, sophomore
Congratulations on your success, best wishes on the final four….. But this report calling the PAN-AM “World Series” is ridiculous.
That’s the name that is being used by the USCF. It is called the world series of chess. The media only follows what the USCF provides.
