Conwy chess group will find talent

A NEW organisation has been set up for the chess playing youth of Conwy.
Founders hope the North Wales Junior Chess Association will create many more opportunities for youngsters in the region and allow them to experience tournament play and coaching.
The association was formed by husband and wife team Andrew and Syringa Camp, who were frustrated at the lack of tournaments in North Wales.
Andrew said: “Children from North Wales have recently started to infiltrate the Welsh Junior Squad and the association wishes to build upon that.”
The couple’s daughter, Imogen, is a pupil at Rydal Penrhos in Colwyn Bay and is already a talented player.
Last April she travelled to the World Schools’ Individual Championship in Romania to represent Wales in an already impressive chess career which has seen her win two British Championships as well as a huge array of other tournaments.
Her father is head of a successful chess club at Rydal Penrhos and runs several events for children in the school every year.
He said there is a lot of talent across the region not being discovered.
Andrew added: “The North Wales Junior Chess Association will be affiliated to the Welsh Chess Union which already caters very successfully for children in South Wales.”
The group has listed a number of aims including to provide events for junior chess players in North Wales, to search for talented players and to eventually host coaching weekends for young players – inviting established titled players and experienced junior coaches.
The group will be celebrating its formation by holding the first North Wales Junior Rapidplay Chess Championship on February 9 at Rydal Penrhos School.
The event is open to any chess player aged 18 or younger who is resident or attending full time education in North Wales.
