LESS than a week after his formal transfer to the United States Chess Federation (USCF), GM Wesley So confirmed his participation in two major international tournaments — the Pan-American Inter-Collegiate Chess Championships in South Padre Island, US on Dec. 27-30 and the 77th Tata Steel Chess Championship on Jan. 9-25 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.
The tournaments will be the firsts for So since his controversial but long-overdue transfer to the USCF.
The name of So, who turned only 21 last month, appeared in the list of players under the US flag for the first time in the November list of FIDE.
In the Pan-American, So will banner two-time champion Webster University-A in the four-day championship, which features the leading universities and colleges all over the US.
With So at the helm, Webster ruled the last two editions of the prestigious competition, also known as the ‘World Series of College Chess.’
Joining So in Webster-A are GMs Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, Georg Meier of Germany and Ray Robson of the United States and reserve FM Carlos Banawa of the Philippines.
The Webster-B will be composed of GMs Illia Nyzhnyk, Vasif Durarbayli, GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez, GM Manuel Leon Hoyos and reserve WGM Anna Sharevich, while Webster-C is built around GMs Andre Diamant and Denes Boros and IMs Ashwin Jayaram, Vitaly Neimer and WIM Inna Agrest.
Webster will be handled by five-time women’s world champion and SPICE founder GM Susan Polgar and FM Paul Truong.
After the Pan-American, So will bring his acts to Wijk ann Zee for the Tata Steel, one of the most important events in the chess calendar.
