      Canadian Junior Chess Championship 2012: NM Zhang is in the lead!

      Canadian U16 Champion, Canadian Master David Zhang, drew with top seed, FM Shiyam Thavandiran, in the fifth round to take a commanding lead in the Canadian Junior Chess Championship. David also managed to make upset victories against NM Keith Mackinnon and NM Richard Wang in round 2 and round 4, respectively. In the current standings (after round 5), NM Richard Wang and FM Shiyam Thavandiran are 0.5 and 1.0 point, respectively, behind the leader.

      In the girls’ section, we see that Nicka Kalaydina is in the lead with 3.5 out of 4.0. Jill Ding of B.C. and Melissa Lee of Ontario are 0.5 and 1.0 point, respectively, behind the leader.

      Additional information about the Canadian Junior Chess Championship:

      There are a total of 12 participants competing in the Open Section and 6 participants in the Girl Section. Other than the cash & plaques prizes, the top male and female winner will receive travel flight vouchers to attend the World Junior Chess Championship in Athens, Greece (value of $1300 per winner)!

      The Canadian Junior Chess Championship is an official event of the Chess Federation of Canada organized by team consisting of Frank Klutymans (chief organizer), IA Vlad Rekhson, Paul Gagne, Tony Ficzere, Angelo Tolentino, NM Dan Kazmaier, IO Simon Ong, Nicka/Alex Kalaydina.
