International Chess Championship Zagreb Open 2011 was held from 11th to 18th April in Zagreb, Croatia. The organizer was Zagreb Chess Federation and the tournament was split in two events, Grandmaster Group for players rated above 2300 and Master Group for players rated under 2300.

Poland’s Grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski continued the string of excellent results and convincingly won the main event with 7.0 points from nine rounds, leaving the nearest opposition full point behind. Gajewski recently won the massive Cappelle La Grande Open 2011.

Local junior IM Saša Martinović was the only to defeat the winner and in the course of the tournament he also earned a Grandmaster norm.

Master Group saw a huge turnout with 159 players competing. Srdjan Basaric, Boris Dugandzic (both Croatia) and Borislav Ivanov (Bulgaria) shared the first place with 7.5 points each. Basaric was declared winner on superior tiebreak score. Juniors Bozidar Ivanovic and Toni Petrusic are sharing 4th, only half a point behind the victors.

The prize fund in the main event was approximately 7200 EUR, with 2000 EUR reserved for the winner, and the prizes in the Master Group amounted to 2400 EUR.
