Bandar Seri Begawan – Datu Ahmad Primary School was recently hosts to Brunei’s elite chess players from the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF).

On the initiative of Headmaster Azlan bin Hj Adam, Grandmaster and National Coach Tahir Vakhidov, FIDE Master Yee-Soon Wei, Candidate Master Md Aliuddin Hj Azahari and all international players were invited to introduce the game of chess at grass roots level.

Around a hundred children were in attendance including visiting teachers from 13 primary schools from the Brunei 1 zone.

The children had the opportunity to learn the names of the chess pieces, how they move and capture and also some simple tactics and strategies.

Following the presentation, Grandmaster Tahir Vakhidov invigilated a game of chess whereby Yee Soon Wei and Md Aliuddin played 16 players (teachers and students) in a simultaneous exhibition using chess clocks.

The whole event was a huge success and to show the school’s appreciation, Grandmaster Tahir Vakhidov was presented with a memento from the Headmaster Azlan bin Hj Adam.

BCF welcomes new players of any age regardless of experience.

They are located at the Brunei Chess Centre based near the national stadium.

For more information, prospective new prayers can contact Tahir Vakhidov on 2382139. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
