      16th Asian Games – Day One
      Individual Rapid chess category started with two rounds

      At the end of day one, in the 16th Asian Games which commenced at the Guangzhou Chess Institute, saw 46 Men and 36 women from 24 countries fighting for honours in the Individual Rapid category to be played on nine Round Swiss system. The competition, which restricts two entries per country, has attracted twenty GMs in the Men Section. There are three GMs, two WIMs & six WGMs in the women section.

      At the end of two rounds today 8 players share the lead with two points in both the Men & women sections.

      Top seeds GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam in Men & GM Hou Yifan in the women section had no problem in winning both their games easily.

      The Chess competition was inaugurated by the President of FIDE Mr. Kirsan Illyumzhinov along with the President of Asian Chess Federation Shiekh Sultan Bin Al Nahiyan and the top seeds GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam & GM Hou Yifan of China in the presence of FIDE General Secretary Ignatius Leong (Technical Director), Chief Arbiter Casto Abundo, Asian Chess Federation General Secretary Hisham Al Taher as well as FIDE Vice Presidents Chu Bo, Mohamad Kambouzia and D.V.Sundar.
