Success is not just a few episodes; rather it is a journey…look back to Anand’s achievements and compare it with MC’s. MC would still have to work a lot to reach that level (we have just witnessed how he was ‘hammered’ by his compatriot!).

While it is possible (even probable) that Magnus will win a match against Vishy at clasical time controls, it is not inevitable. Both Alekhine and Fisher won world title matchces against opponents they had never beaten before in a single game (Alekhine against Capablanca, and Fischer against Spassky). In this tournament, Vishy had a higher score than Magnus, even after, Magnus’ win in the final. The chess world has been deprived of too many great matches (Morphy-Staunton, Botvinnik-Reshevsky, Fischer-Karpov, to mention a few), so I certainly would love to see a match between Magnus and Vishy, rather than have Vishy retire.
The way Anand handled the question at the press conference about who is the best chess player in the world showed that Anand is not only still the crowned “King of Chess” but also a king of diplomacy.
This emphasis on who is the “best” seems a bit juvenile to me. With so many great chess players to watch these days, and such great coverage of the events on the internet, it’s a real pleasure to be a chess fan these days.

Very nice to see Anand with Carlsen. Hopefully a friendly championship is coming our way between these two gentlemen, without the psychological dirty tricks of previous.

Well, it was “just” a friendly and short rapid tournament – so impossible to draw any certain conclutions.
But, keep in mind that some of the upcoming Candidate mini-matches next year probably will end as tiebreaks after 4(6) ordinary games. Then there will be rapid games and eventually blitz.
Carlsen being the fastest young gun in Chessville will have an edge in such tiebreaks.
Anand played at his normal strength. It’s just that Carlsen is now stronger than Anand has ever been in his life.
Carlsen can now almost certainly beat anybody in the world in a proper-length (10 games or more) match and would very likely become World Champion in this cycle if a proper Candidates system was held.
Of course the idiot system of mini-matches that Ilyumzhinov is insisting on randomises everything to a great degree; therefore anything can happen.
This was the same principle that Kramnik deliberately applied for his idiot Dortmund 2002 “Candidates”, so as to greatly lessen Kasparov’s chances of qualifying for a rematch.
And then Kramnik claims he was “surprised” when Kasparov refused to play in his travesty. Yeah, right!!
Magnus has won all tournaments he has played this year. Score in classical games is 10 wins, one loss and 12 draws vs average of 2717. Not to mention his results last fall. Nobody has been even close to compare his results the last year.
Personally…I think Fide is so screwed up that a Match between Anand and Carlsen should take place outside Fide. They’ve run the outfit for the past 25 years like complete morons..
This is the match everyone wants to see…..and seriously…..nobody even comes close. The only chance they have is a lucky strike here and there…..Just Look At Fides um..”Champions” (Besides Mr Anand) in the past 25 years…..Not a single one of them the Best Player in the world….and everyone knows it.
