Hammer time chess tactic Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving White to move. How should White proceed? Source: ChessToday.net Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
1.d6 Kf7 2.d7 Nc7 3.Rf8+ Kxe7 4.d8/Q
Isnt 1. d6 obvious?
1. d6 Kf7
2. d7 N moves
3. Rf8+ followed by 4. d8=Q
or Black can try:
1….. Rc1+
2. Kh2 Rd1
3. d7 Rxd7
4. Rxd7 and easily stops the c-pawn.
Well, 1. Rxe8 Kf7 doesn’t help in any way, so 1. d6! stands out. Now, 1… Rd2 is black’s only decent reply, so let us see:
1. d6! Rd2
2. d7!
Now what? 2… Kf7 3. dxe8Q+ Kg7 4. Qf8# is mate, while 3… Ke6 4. Rxd2 is surrender. 2… Rxd7 3. Rxd7 c3 4. Bg5 is hardly better.

Greeting Susan and Paul,
I send you good wishes from Houston.
This is a very interesting problem.
I attended your chess camp in Las Vegas and learned a great deal.
Kindly help me on one point, did you say that one should wait until they return home before they analyses their game after a tournament?
Thank you in advance.

Well, the Knight is hanging, and Rxe8+ is tempting, but it succumbs to 1. … Kf7 with a double attack regaining the piece.
1. d6 is also tempting…
1. d6 Kf7?
2. d7 and if the Knight runs then 3. Rf8+ … 4. d8Q
… but I don’t see a convincing win for White after 1. d6 Rd2 or 1. … Rc1+ 2. Kh2 Rd1
So what’s left… hmmm… how about 1. Bg5 covering c1 and d2, with the threats Rxe8+ and d6 still?
1. Bg5 Kf7
2. Rd7+ Kg8
3. d6
1. Bg5 Re2
2. d6 Kf7
3. d7!
