Robert von Weizsäcker candidate for ECU President

      Chess election, ECU

Robert von Weizsäcker candidate for ECU President
His opponents are Boris Kutin, Ali Nihat Yazici, and Silvio Danailov

The candidates for the position of ECU President are already four. To the already known candidacies of Boris Kutin, Ali Nihat Yazici, and Silvio Danailov has joined yet another contestant – Robert von Weizsäcker, President of the German Chess Federation.

Robert von Weizsäcker announced his candidacy in a press conference together with Karpov and Kasparov. The new candidate announced he wants to “bring chess back to the players”. There are several months to the elections during the Khanty Mansiysk Olympiad, all the candidates are still to announce their programs.

      High interest in ECU

The interest for the position of ECU President is definitely higher than ever. Four candidates are competing for the position, whereas only two are the candidates for FIDE (Ilyumzhinov and Karpov). The question of the high popularity of the ECU post was first indirectly answered by the current President Boris Kutin himself. In an interview for Chessdom.com he states, “When ECU was founded the main target was to defend Europe, actually some kind of anti Campomanes organization. Today this story is almost forgotten, in FIDE Congress 1986 in Dubai delegates elected Continental President who had (this is estimation, official figures will never be known) less than 20 percent of European votes. So ECU was way of self defense. The story of today is much different. Not to be too modest I can say that we made a big progress. Europe represent at least 75 or 80 percent of World Chess. In other words : European chess needs professional organization in the face of ECU.”

Boris Kutin added also an important fact, European Chess does not seem to be affected by the financial crisis. “It is not easy to organize all our events, but in the last years we are just making all the record after record: participants, number of participating countries, and prize fund. Impressive are the figures about EICC and EWCC: last year 240.000 (in total), this year 225.000, next year new record (280.000 for sure, very possible 300.000).”

Europe was also the host of the World Chess Championship which Viswanathan Anand won with unprecedented for the decade prize fund, and will also host the World Chess Championship 2012 in London with at least the same prize fund again.

The interest in the game in Europe is growing, companies are investing more and more in sponsorship, IBM is planning a whole new look in the game via Blue Gene computers, chess is entering schools curriculums, political figures are standing behind grandmasters, Russia via Dvorkovich and Zhukov will make important steps for making chess Olympic sport. ECU has become an important fundament of the World Chess Federation and as such is rising high interests among different candidates.

Interesting candidacy. Added to that of Karpov for FIDE President, this would indeed be a change for chess. A change is definitely needed as chess is going nowhere fast at the moment! The recent World Championship got almost zero coverage. What we did get was news about Kirsan Ilhumzhinov meeting aliens. No wonder people think chess players are weirdos. Not good for chess!
