HOUGHTON — The Tech Chess Club held its final chess class of the semester, Saturday.

Tech Chess Club offers lessons for the area’s youth in cooperation with Houghton/Keweenaw 4-H Organization.

The program is conducted each semester and consists of four two-hour sessions. The youngsters learned a great deal of chess in that time and become quite proficient at the game.

The classes are taught by three Tech students: senior Joe Abrams, second year student Alex Mebrie, and graduate student Chris Dedene.

Joe stated that this semester there were 29 kids attending the classes. The 4-H has a prescribed limit of 10 youngsters for each instructor. It may be that a second class will be needed if the interest in the Chess Program continues to grow as it has.

I asked Joe if this class was ever offered to the adult public. He told me that those interested in pursuing chess could attend the MTU Chess Club gatherings.
