UTB-TSC will hold the President’s Cup, “Final Four of Chess” this weekend on the school’s campus.“Having people come to our campus is very special,” said Russell Harwood, the manager of the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College chess team.UTB-TSC will compete against the University of Texas at Dallas, Texas Tech University, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the national championship for college chess.

Harwood said this year’s tournament should be a nail-biter. “Truthfully, this will probably be the most evenly matched Final Four ever,” Harwood said. “Any of the four teams could win. Other years, the other teams were a distant third and fourth from the other teams.”

UTB-TSC has the added support of Timur Gareev and Axel Bachmann, two students who left to play chess professionally and recently returned to the team.

Today’s games will take place at the Education and Business Complex in the Salon Cassia, with the first round beginning at 10 a.m. and the second round at 5 p.m. Games will be broadcast on the Web at www.monroi.com. The public is welcome to attend free of charge.

International master Alonso Almeida will be providing commentary on the games in room 1.224 of the Educational and Business Complex.
