      Chessmates battle in season opener
      Saturday, February 20, 2010

IT will be a battle of the champions during the 19th Kundan Singh Chess Championship when top local players compete in the first tournament of the new season at the FASANOC House tomorrow.

Over 25 players are expected to rub shoulders before the winner is found at the end of the day.

Defending champion Manoj Kumar will defend his title against top contenders Calvin Prasad, Dr Neel Arora and Goru Arvind.

In the women’s category, Oceania rep Hilda Areki faces a tough challenge from veteran Gloria Sukhu and Aditi Sharan.

Fiji Chess Federation secretary Dr Jashint Maharaj said the tournament would be an exciting event as players stamp their mark for the new season.

“Preparation for the tournament is going on well and I believe all players will want to start the season on a high note,” Maharaj said.

“Defending champion Manoj has confirmed his participation again.”

Maharaj said the tournament would be the toughest for the season.
