      Tuesday, 16 February 2010 18:20

The 8th International Caspian Cup Chess Tournament, under management of the Gilan Chess Association, is taking place on 11-18th February in Rash, Iran. GM Azer Mirzoev, the leading player after six rounds, drew with black pieces against the Indian GM-elect Sriram Jha, allowing a group of players to catch him in the lead.

Mirzoev’s compatriot GM Farid Abbasov won against IM Gaioz Nigalidze from Georgia, while two Iranians, GM Elshan Moradiabadi and, surprisingly, FM Asghar Golizadeh, defeated Armenian Grandmasters Gevorg Harutjunyan and Artur Chibukhchian. The three winners are now sharing the first place with Mirzoev, with 5 points on the scoreboard.

Further, a group of six players is holding close with 4.5 points each.

Top round eight matches are GM Azer Mirzoev – GM Elshan Moradiabadi, FM Asghar Golizadeh – GM Farid Abbasov, IM Arash Roghani – IM Sriram Jha, IM Robert Hovhannisyan – GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan and IM Malkhaz Sulashvili – IM Homayoon Toufighi.

A day after the conclusion of the Caspian Cup, another strong open tournament is taking place in Iran – 18th Fajr International Chess Open Tournament.
