Eugenio Torre, Philippines, Prospero Pichay Cup

Vintage Torre goes to work in Pichay chessfest
      10/05/2009 11:45 AM

Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre displayed vintage form to topple fifth seed GM Abhijeet Gupta of India in a keenly-watched battle to forge a seven-way tie for the lead in the fifth round of the fifth Prospero Pichay Cup international chess championship at the LWUA Bldg. in Quezon City.

Torre, the “Ageless Warrior” of Philippine chess, dug deep in his vast experience to beat the higher-rated Indian player (ELO 2584) and stretch his winning streak to three games in this tough, nine-round tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

The 57-year-old Filipino ace, who is still hoping to recover from a lackluster showing in the recent President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Cup chess tournament, is now tied for the lead with top seed GM Mikhail Mchedlishvili of Georgia, No. 4 GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam, No. 6 GM Ehsan Ghaemmaghami of Iran, No. 7 GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia and World Cup-bound Filipino GMs Rogelio Antonio Jr. and Darwin Laylo.

Mchedlishvili , the highest-rated player here with an ELO of 2613, drew with Ghaemmaghami in their top board encounter.

Here you can see the published salaries of various fide officials:

Are they making good for the enormous amounts they are spending? At least they dont hide in the trenches.

How about USCF officials? How much they get?

It is very good to watch how the birth of the new World Champion is celebrated by the world chess community just as the performances of the other contestants in the tournament are also praised.

What I most admire about Vishy, a top chess star for many years, is his capacity to consistently strive to eliminate weaknesses
in his play and further improve his already very high preparedness and to breathe chess with his soul and mind.

I value his devotion to chess, to the world chess community and his brotherly efforts to support those who need it.

I wish to see young chess players match the elegance of his play, his fighting spirit and, most of all, his attitude that makes him
        friend to many chess enthusiasts.

He is a great chess star who has now again reached the top of the chess world.

I wish him good health and fighting spirit for the future.
