      Deepan in joint lead

Online edition of India’s National Newspaper
      Saturday, Jul 11, 2009

NEW DELHI: Ninth seed Deepan Chakkravarthy was joined by Spain’s Daniel Alsina in the lead at five points after six rounds of the Paris International chess championship in Paris on Thursday.

Deepan drew his top board battle with Luxembourg’s Alberto David, while Alsina ended the unbeaten run of Sriram Jha on the second board.

Third seed Parimarjan Negi moved within half a point of the leaders after spoiling the Grandmaster-norm prospects of compatriot S. Satyapragyan. The 16-year-old now plays top-seeded Ukrainian Sergey Fedorchuk, the conqueror of Mary Ann Gomes. Besides, Negi and Fedorchuk, there are four other players at 4.5 points.

      S. Kidambi defeated Spain’s Eric Dominguez to reach 4.5 points after six rounds of the 32nd Barbera del Valles International Open tournament at Barbera del Valles.

The victory brought Kidambi within striking distance of the four leaders at five points.

      First win for Tania

Top seed Tania Sachdev (1.5 points) scored her first victory in the Donostia Chess Festival by beating Ukraine’s Anastazia Karlovich to share the fourth spot after three rounds at San Sebastian, Spain.

Tania’s 59-move victory with white came after she used her extra bishop to full advantage against the lowest-ranked challenger in the 10-player women’s field.

Russia’s Irina Zakurdjaeva stayed ahead at three points by maintaining her winning sequence after facing Romania’s Adina-Maria Hamdouchi.
