The impact of Greek financial crisis on chess

      Greece, Harikrishna Pentala

Protesters gather in front of the parliament building during an anti-austerity pro-government rally in Athens, Greece, June 21, 2015. Greece's leftwing government believes it can reach a deal with its creditors, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Sunday after almost eight hours of meetings to thrash out proposals ahead of a last-ditch summit with European leaders on Monday. Greek tragedy halts Harikrishna’s run
      Archiman Bhaduri,TNN | Jul 4, 2015, 08.47 AM IST

KOLKATA: The economic crisis in Greece has come in the way of Indian Grandmaster Pentala Harikrishna’s wonderful run recently.

The 29-year-old reached Patras in Greece earlier this week to take part in the Greek Team Chess Championship only to be told that the tournament had been postponed due to the ongoing crisis that has almost paralysed the entire country.

On Monday, Hari won the 10th Edmonton Chess Festival in Canada to push his Elo rating to a career-high 2740. He was looking to continue his rich vein of form in the July 3-8 tournament in Greece, where he was due to represent Kavala Club.

“All sporting events in Greece from July 4 to 6 have been postponed after the referendum on Sunday. But the organisers are taking good care of me,” said Hari, who was planning to stay back and practice there for a few days.
