Former world champion Chen dates Zambia

FORMER world woman chess champion Grand Master Zhu Chen will this month visit Zambia to promote Africa as a tourist attraction with focus on sport for development.

Chen, who is on a tour of the continent, arrives in Zambia on November 20 on a four-day visit. According to a statement from African Chess Confederation Women’s Commission (ACCWC) secretary Keenese Katisenge, Chen is seen as an inspiration and role model to many young girls in the sport.

“The African Chess Confederation has seen it fit to partner with the World Chess Federation Women’s Commission (WCFWC) and continue with the initiative of promoting women chess by bringing role models closer to younger chess players and aspiring chess players,” Katisenge said.

She said Chen’s visit would inspire and motivate young girls in Africa with the main focus on their retention in sports. Katisenge said the former champion would engage in mini training sessions with a selected number of young chess players from the selected African countries. She said the 2015 tour would also target Seychelles, Mozambique and Malawi.

Katisenge said in the second quarter of 2016, the second episode of Chen’s assignment would be a visit to West and East Africa. Chess Federation of Zambia tournaments director Aaron Banda said young female players would benefit greatly from the coaching clinics that would be conducted by the former champion.

As part of the promotional tour last year, WCFWC brought WGM Anastasiia Karlovych of Ukraine to Botswana.
