      BFMS Chess Team finishes 10th in national tournament

      The Benjamin Franklin Middle School Traveling Chess Team finished in 10th place in the recent Super-Nationals IV Chess Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

      The national tournament, which is held every four years, included 5,280 chess players from 47 states.

      The chess players competed in different sections, based on grade and skill levels.

      The Benjamin Franklin Middle School team competed in a section with 32 teams.

      After seven rounds of play, the Benjamin Franklin team finished in a tie for ninth place. Based on tie-breaker points, Benjamin Franklin finished with a 10th place trophy.

      Chris Teeple and Johnny Hughes paced the Benjamin Franklin team with four points each.

      Chris Anderson is the coach of the Benjamin Franklin team. The members of the team are Zachary Anderson, Josh Bush, Brandon Gordon, Johnny Hughes, Mason Huggins, Dalton Ruggieri and Chris Teeple.

      Earlier, the Benjamin Franklin team finished in eighth place at the Virginia State Championship Tournament in Charlottesville.

      At the state tournament, the team also placed fifth in a Blitz tournament. Blitz is a form of speed chess in which each player has only five minutes to play.

      In the state tournament, Brandon Gordon won an individual medal for the Benjamin Franklin team by leading a four-point effort.
