Florida youths dazzle: Among the millions of chess players in the United States exists a core group of less than 100,000 tournament competitors. At least half of them are under 21. A remarkable number of the best youths hail from Florida. The U.S. Chess Federation provides recognition by regularly publishing Top 100 lists for each age category. Sixty-two Florida youths made the lists this month. Five of them are titled Masters and 15 are Experts.
Two superstars, Ray Robson, 14, and Daniel Ludwig, 18, are No. 1 on their lists. They are both nationally rated Senior Masters. Robson tied for first in the adult Florida Championship last year and is the youngest International Master (IM) in the country. Ludwig recently qualified for his IM title. Both teens have the distinction of having competed in the closed U.S. Championship. The overall Top 100 list for youths also includes: Eric Rodriguez, Corey Acor, Jeffrey Haskel, Brian Goldstein, Ernesto Alvarez and Toby Boas.
