If you don’t know, search engines are quite handy these days.

Regarding search engines, Google has already overnight registered this very page as the 3rd hit for those words (4th hit if you put quotes around them).

This is true even though the exact quotation appears on hundreds of other webpages, as you can see by looking beyond the top-10 hits. Including, for instance, this Spanish-language blog by a chess lover in Montreal (scroll down to Jan 2008 midway on the page)—and also including some earlier pages by Susan! What I infer this means is that Google’s search ordering depends on recent traffic figures as well as on “authority”—and this blog gets a lot of traffic!

It also means that Google’s automatic web crawlers are quick to pick up on posts here. Incidentally, the reason you have to do the “word verification” is to prove that you are not a web crawler!

(Ah! During the time I’ve been writing this, something seems to have gone weird with Google’s “Safe Browsing Diagnostic Tool”, and they are having overloaded-server problems. This message is now as-much a “heads-up” to Susan herself, in case there’s a knock-on effect on Blogger.)
