
Checkmate: About 85 youths participate in chess tournament

WAITE PARK — About 85 students from 37 schools competed in the 2009 Regional Chess Tournament on Saturday at Discovery Community School.
The event was sponsored by Resource Training & Solutions and St. Cloud school district.
Students competed in grade groups and three divisions: Castle, Queen and King.
The winners are:
Kindergarten — second grade
Castle Division: first, Tanner Weyer, Meadowvale Elementary in Elk River, kindergarten; second, Megan Bettendorf, home school, second grade; third, Ethan O’Hara, Lincoln Elementary in Elk River, second grade; fourth, Zachary Lindstrom, STRIDE Academy, kindergarten.
Queen Division: first, Armando Thull, Westwood Elementary, second grade; second, Zachery Raveling, Cambridge-Isanti Intermediate, first grade; Evan Flores, Oak Ridge Elementary, kindergarten; Connor Lorbiecke, St. Andrew, second grade.
King Division: first, Matthew Lindstrom, STRIDE Academy, second grade; Sean Kurvers, Pine Meadow Elementary, second grade; third, John Byun, Oak Hill Community, first grade.
Third-fourth grade
Castle Division: first, Jonathan Oleson, Pine Meadow Elementary, fourth grade; second, Josh Maricle-Roberts, Kennedy Community, fourth grade; third, Tyler Mosby, St. Michael Elementary, fourth grade; fourth, Freedom Martin, Lincoln Elementary, third grade.
