Chess wants veterans into administration

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has asked veterans to consider joining administration to help in uplifting the standards of the sport.

President Kezzie Msukwa made the calls at the end of the fourth edition of Lab Enterprise individual championship at Blantyre Sports Club last week.

“We need veterans to contest at next year’s elections. Your wisdom is vital to the growth of the sport. You have been there before and you can guide us on areas, which we are failing,” Msukwa said.

The president said the veterans have a duty of raising the standards of the sport.

Msukwa said veterans would be more useful in training students once Chessam launches its ‘chess I schools project’. Former Chessam president Lawrence Kumwembe conceded that they have a role to play to help in development of the game.

“Of course we can help in various ways,” he said.

Kumwembe, who was the president when the body was abbreviated as Cham, observed that sport has significantly grown.

“During our time, we had no individuals with titles such as candidate masters. This time I read in the newspapers that the country has rated players which is a no mean achievement,” he said.
