Armenian team aims for victory in coming 41st Chess Olympiad – Aronian

YEREVAN, June 24. /ARKA/. Armenia’s national chess team is determined to win in the forthcoming chess Olympiad in Norway, leader of the team Levon Aronian said as cited by Novosti-Armenia.

The 41st Chess Olympiad will be held in Tromso of Norway on August 1-14. Armenia’s team is a three-time world chess Olympiad champion (in Turin in 2006, in Dresden in 2008 and in Istanbul in 2012).

“Expectations are the same as before. The only goal is to win. We should fight to win”, Aronian said.

Aronian also said it was nice to have the Olympiad in Norway that had a landscape somehow similar to the Armenian one. He said he was back to his homeland from three hard tournaments and hoped to recover and get prepared for the Olympiad.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen, in his turn, said Norway had been waiting for an Olympiad for long. He said Norwegian team ambitions were more modest – to improve its results in playing against Armenians. Norway lost 4:0 in the last game with Armenians, he said.

Carlsen said he admired the way chess was treated in Armenia and it should serve as an example for other countries.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen arrived in Armenia invited by the Initiatives for Development of Armenia (IDeA) Foundation and Acronis company. During his visit Carlsen met with high-ranking secular officials, church leaders and the IT and chess communities.
