        GO RITA!

With the highest-rated player at 2046, and the lowest rated at less than a third of this, there are likely to be a lot of non-games.

There have only been 13 draws, and these are of course not, on the basis of the ratings which is all there is to go on, the most likely draws.

It will be interesting to see at the end of this how many games did not go as ‘forecast’ by the ratings. I suspect – very few.

Leaves me wondering whether Swiss pairing is the best way to set up interesting games.

But maybe that is not the objective of this Tournament. Maybe the objective, admittedly the normal one, is that the best player gets the most points.

With this spread of rating, setting up meaningful games must be very difficult.

Yeh – been wondering about that myself.

C Munoz at 1324 loses to Carter (1877): no surprise there. Then wins against players rated 969 and then (!) 879: ditto.

Good 4th Rnd draw against a ‘1726’, nudging TPR from 1324 to 1348 but even this player is 402 ELO away.

        The nearest players to Munoz’ 1324 have ratings 1255, 1258, 1294, 1300, 1315, 1322, 1337 and 1349 – and she hasn’t played any of them.

In my opinion, ratings for scholastic players are not exactly “true” when you have players from all over the country. A kid from NY gets to play many more high-rated players than a girl from a small state. I see a lot of draws and upsets here that percentages say should not happen.

Let the chips fall where they may. Looks like a great event.

Very true: the player from Hawai’i rated 900 after one prior tournament, then won a quad in warm-up which shot up her provisional rating to 1500+. This probably applies to many sub-1500 players in this tournament.

        I agree.

In fact, I played Ashbea, from HI, in the first round and lost. Part of it was my fault- I didn’t castle. But she was really good.

I think that’s right about the reliability of these ratings.
Players from separate ‘pools’ tend to have incomparable ratings, e.g. human players and computers.

A pity, though, that Faith Munoz, who volunteered to play even though she has no chess ambitions, was not just paired with the lowest-TPR players until she got at least a draw.

Without going to a full ‘ladder’, I would have taken Faith and the lowest-TPR player on least points that she hadn’t played out of the Swiss calculations.

Seems the friendliest thing to do all round.
