The great work of Kate Taylor

      Clatkanie, Kate Taylor

      Bringing home the honors

Kudos to the young members of the Clatskanie Chess Club, who brought home a truckload of honors from last weekend’s Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation State Championship in Seaside. The Clatskanie club’s strong showing shouldn’t come as any surprise. It’s one of the largest chess clubs in the state. Twenty-two of the 200 finalists who squared off at the Seaside tournament were students from Clatskanie, according to Daily News reporter Stephanie Mathieu.

It probably helps that chess is taught to second- and third-graders in Clatskanie public schools. The chess club leader, Kate Taylor, told Mathieu that roughly 600 of the school district’s 1,000 students play chess. Good for them. It’s a great way to sharpen the mind and have fun at the same time.
