      Anand conferred honorary doctorate

CHENNAI, March 17: World Champion Viswanathan Anand was on Monday conferred honorary doctorate by the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contribution to the game.

The Indian chess wizard could not attend the convocation function as he is participating in the blindfold and rapid championships in Nice (France).

Anand’s parents, Viswanathan and Susheela, received the award from Governor Surjit Singh Barnala during a function at the Raj Bhavan.

‘It was his success in the world scene that has made this ancient Indian game, a mass sport in India’, the citation released at the function said.

He could not attend the event but sent his parents to represent him…..isn’t that the same thing as drawing the ceremony?? You have to give it to Anand….even on these events he works himself to a draw!!

        From Amber site:

The Bulgarian got a good position and felt that at some point he should have fought for more. In the end he forced a draw with a repetition of moves. He had briefly considered playing on, but with 40 seconds on the clock he dismissed this idea. As he explained with a smile: ‘I didn’t want to blitz. Especially not against Anand.’
