Saturday Game Club seeks to help students excel at AIMS

Students at Maya High School, a charter school in west Phoenix, are being tutored for the upcoming AIMS tests by engaging in activities such as Scrabble, Sudoku and chess.

Traditional tutoring and reading-writing-math workshops are still very much in place Monday through Friday, but Game Club is a new, experimental way of tutoring that takes place on Saturday mornings.

The philosophy behind this program is that a general sense of strategy and logic will hone the problem-solving skills required for the AIMS tests. Initiators of Game Club, which includes administrators and teachers, analyzed last year’s scores and sought students who “approached” the state standard in at least two of the three state tests. These students were invited to join the new program.

The principal of Maya High School, Ricardo Borunda, supports the teacher-led program by saying, “it’s a new way to challenge our students in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.”
