      Lost in translation?

      MTel, Veselin Topalov

I was wondering what happened to Topalov when I read this. I thought he was injured and needed a bandage. And don’t forget gross master. Read on 🙂

      Veselin Topalov plays with bandage

      FOCUS News Agency

Sofia – 19th world chess champion Veselin Topalov would play with bandage against 40 year old Italian a day before the start of M-Tel Masters in Sofia, the organizers of the tournament said. This demonstration will be played in Sofia Hall in Grand Hotel Sofia. The judge will start clocks at 19.30 pm. Both would have half an hour for play. In distinction of his rival Bulgarian gross master wouldn’t be able to see his board.

Against Topalov would sit Alex Brunetti from Como town. Last year he won in the game “Play like Topalov”, which was led during M-Tel Masters. On the web site of the game www.mtelmasters.com chess fens had to guess the moves of Topalov. Brunetti guessed 209 moves. The game was so popular that 1850 from all over the word took part in it.

I read the originial bulgarian text and I agree that the translation is just awful. In bulgarian, grand master is “gross maistor”. They apparently have translated “maistor” to “master” probably thinking that gross is the same in English.

Has it become a virtue for all non-native speakers of English to master the English language these days? Actually there is a world outside the Anglo-American one, with roughly 6,2 billion inhabitants. Let everyone speak as good or bad English as he or she can.

Hmmm…, I love GuessTheMove competitions. We should hold more of this. This would be one great way to popularize chess amongst the masses.

I think the “bandage” is for “blindfold” 😉

Grossmeister is also the term in german and Weltmeister is for world champion – I think there was a picture of M Tal when he was still WCC playing Fischer and I recall the name cards having these titles.

Ah, I think I know what this means. There’s a sequence in one of the Tintin stories (The Calculus Affair?), in which Captain Haddock has a major to do trying to get rid of a piece adhesive tape, getting it stuck first one place, then another, while trying to get rid of it, finally thinking it’s gone when it’s really stuck to his hat, then eventually passing it on to a customs official who gets stuck with it. I bet the same thing happened to Topalov.

Bandage could mean either “handicap” or “blindfold”. Hmmm… I wonder which one it is.

The translation is from a news agency called focus-news (www.focus-news.net) not Mtel.
