ERIE – The Erie High School chess team is again ranked No. 1 in the state, and Galesburg Grade School is now ranked No. 3 in the state.

Chess coach Ralph Bowman told the CUSD 101 Board of Education Monday that EHS, Galesburg and Thayer all received trophies at the last tournament, with Galesburg and Erie placing first and Thayer placing second.

Thayer ranks seventh in the state.

“The Galesburg team also set a record this year. They were the first team at the Cherryvale tournament to be undefeated with a 20-0 record,” Bowman said.

He commended team members from all the schools.

“They’ve had a tremendous year,” Bowman said. “I believe this is the strongest team I’ve had in 25 years and we have an excellent chance of winning state.”

Bowman requested that the board pay expenses for the team to attend the national chess tournament this year in Kansas City.

The board agreed to pay about $6,000 for expenses.

Bowman also announced he would be retiring as chess coach after this year, but would continue to assist students on a one-on-one basis.
