FLORIDA: High Springs boy wins national chess title with school team
      By Christa Desrets
      Herald Writer

HIGH SPRINGS – Haydee Clark of High Springs has a long history of playing chess with her siblings, father and grandfather.

Her husband, Mark Clark, also enjoys the game.

But at 6 years old, their son Andrew is the only one who has ever won a national chess title.

And although his parents helped teach Andrew the basics of chess when he first started learning to play in August, they now find that Andrew is the one doing the teaching as he continues to place well in tournaments.

Haydee said that her son got his love of chess and other games from her side of the family.

As a child, Haydee recalls playing chess with her grandfather, and she still has an old chess set that he gave her.

It is contained in a box that, when opened with a key, spills out black and tan chess pieces and unfolds to become a chessboard.

And when the opportunity arose for Andrew to also learn chess at school, Haydee said, she thought the timing was great.

“Everything that you learn when you’re young stays with you,” she said. “If you start anything at a young age, it just comes natural.”

So when Andrew started his kindergarten year at Oak Hall School, a private school in Gainesville, chess was part of his new curriculum.

Aren’t you supposed to be resting.

(Now that I for one don’t appreciate this.)
