      Kids learn the moves of chess at the Chili library

      (January 12, 2007) — “Wow,” said Adam DeSantis of Chili as James Witt, 8, made a smart move while DeSantis helped his beginner opponent at a Chili Chess Club tournament.

      DeSantis, the director of the club who is known as “Mr. Chess,” celebrated his 83rd birthday on Dec. 28 by hosting the tournament at the Chili Public Library. He enjoys teaching a younger generation to play the game he took up a long time ago, “in my Army days,” said DeSantis.

      In the quiet room, filled with only whispered “touch move” reminders and “check” calls, 18 players battled in three divisions; young beginners, young intermediate players and young teens.

      Youth chess tournament slated for Saturday

      GREEN BAY — The 10th Annual Scholastic Chess Tournament will take place Saturday at Franklin Middle School, 1234 W. Mason St.

      The event, sponsored by the Green Bay Chess Club and the Green Bay School District, is for students in grades 3 through 8.

      Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and awards will be presented at about 2 p.m. Pairings will be made in two levels: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. All students will compete in four rounds.
