Anand on song at Candidates chess

Viswanathan Anand continued his fine form and crashed through the defences of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbai-jan to notch up his second win in the Candidates Chess tournament at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia.

Not many experts had given Anand a chance coming in to Candidates after he lost the world championship to Magnus Carlsen of Norway in November last year.

However, the ‘Tiger from Madras’ has not only proved his critics wrong but also emerged as a serious contender even though it is still early days in the 14-round tournament.

With 2.5 points in his kitty from the first three games.

The other three games in the eight-player double round robin tournament ended in draws. Former world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria missed his chance against top seed Levon Aronian of Armenia while Dmitry Andreikin signed peace with fellow Russian Sergey Karjakin after playing solidly as white.

With 11 rounds still to go, Topalov and Aronian are on 1.5 points and Kramnik has the same score with a game in hand. Andreikin and Karjakin both have one point from three outings and Mamedyarov is currently at the bottom with just a half point in his kitty so far.

He’s played three games and has eleven more to go. We all know he can’t keep up the winning streak, and will certainly not win this event. I like Anand though.

He is well prepared, sharp and swift. His attacks are deadly and he looks in fine form. He should be able to sail through this tournament easily.
