Webster U win shows ‘unchallenged dominance’ in chess

Webster University’s “unchallenged dominance of collegiate chess” was shown at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, the New York Times reports.

Webster U’s three teams were among the Pan-Am’s top six finishers, the newspaper reports, with its A team taking home the title and winning all its matches. Webster’s B team tied for fourth, and the university’s C squad took sixth place.

The 60th annual Pan-American championship, held Dec. 27-30 this year in Lubbock, Texas, is the qualifier for the “Final Four” of college chess in April, which awards the President’s Cup to the national champion.

Webster U took the national collegiate title in 2012 and is the “overwhelming favorite” to win this year at the Final Four in April, the newspaper reports. It will face University of Illinois, Texas Tech University and University of Maryland in Baltimore County.

The top team from Webster U included Wesley So of the Philippines and Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, who are ranked in the world’s top 50 players, according to the Times. Susan Polgar runs Webster’s chess program.
