Chess players battle to raise funds for children’s hospital

Thirty-two players battled during the BrainyChess open charity chess tournament last weekend at the Residence Inn Pleasanton.
Vignesh Varadarajan and Dhanush Venkatesh ran this tournament, which raised funds for the Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland
Filled with exciting games, the highest section in the tournament (the open section) was won by an international chess master, Ricardo De Guzman. He won his first three games and drew his last game, giving him clear first place with 3.5 points. Kesav Viswanadha, a national chess master, won the second prize in the open section with three wins and one loss and Armaan Kalyanapur won the u2100 class prize. The second place u2100 prize was shared between Milind Maiti, Joanna Liu and Alexander Feghhi.
The Reserve section was won by Jonathan Topielski and Alan F. Howe, who won must-win games in the last round, scoring 3.5 points in the tournament. Aurum Kathuria earned the u1200 prize in reserve after winning a long last round game.
