      Chess Column, Stephen Dann

George Mirijanian of Fitchburg won the A Division of the Wachusett Chess Club championship finals, 5-2, in an eight-player round robin at Fitchburg State University.

Bruce Felton, Larry Gladding and Carissa Yip, 9, tied for second, a half point behind. Bruce Felton won the club blitz championship last Wednesday, this time with Paul Godin and Larry Gladding a half point behind. See the stats and details of the upcoming Harlow Daly Memorial that begins Wednesday at www.wachusettchess.org.

Carissa Yip of Chelmsford last week won the Under age 10 www.chesskids.com online invitational event, sponsored by www.chess.com, which has more than 7 million members.

At www.uschesschamps.com, you’ll see games of the ongoing U.S. Junior invitational in St. Louis, with Robert Perez, 17, of M.I.T. one of the top seeds.

Alexander Ivanov of Newton and Jonathan Yedidia of Cambridge dominated the 63rd New Hampshire Open last weekend, but top N.H. resident was Braden Bournival in the 37-player event in Manchester.

Wednesday marks the 21st anniversary of the death of Barry Spiegel (1948-92), Worcester’s most noteworthy chess diplomat. His funeral was the day GM Mikhail Tal (1936-92) died, and we honor Tal with another of his positions today.

On www.boylstonchessclub.org, there are photos of the 1988 visit of Tal, to both Boston and Framingham, for simultaneous displays, posted by Steve Stepak earlier this year.

At this writing after six of nine rounds, Nikaru Nakamura leads the 8th Tal Memorial that ends today in Moscow. We recommend www.chessbase.com as well as www.chesscafe.com as two sites to get news and see games of such international events.

The tribute by Marlboro native Bill Kelleher to the late Bill Lukowiak can be found at www.uschess.org/InPassing. We also spoke last week with Erik Helmreich and his wife, Mary, a watercolor artist, on their memories of Bill, who was a key employee at their Boston Chess Studio, 1969-80, on Newbury Street in Boston.

Top events of the week at www.masschess.org are one-day formats on Friday in Waltham, Saturday in Westwood and Somerville, as club weeknight events end this week in Worcester and Natick.

Answer to quiz: At the 1970 Sochi tourney, Tal won by 1. … Rf6ch, forcing a winning pawn ending by precise calculation. View a host of such positions in “The Magic Tactics of Mikhail Tal,” published by www.newinchess.com.
