A day to remember for Parimarjan

Negi shocked Nielsen in 39 moves

Sethuraman, too, continued his fine run

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi pulled off one of the biggest victories of his career when he scored over Denmark’s highly-rated Peter Heine Nielsen to be among the leaders after the seventh round of the Politiken Cup chess tournament at Copenhagen on Thursday.

Nielsen, rated 2680 as compared to Parimarjan’s 2590, is better known for being a long-time second of World champion Viswanathan Anand.

Playing white, Parimarjan won their violent game in 39 moves when Nielsen gave up after being a knight in deficit.

With 6.5 points, Parimarjan shares the lead with top seed Vladimir Malakhov (Russia) and Tiger Hillarp Persson (Sweden). Parimarjan next plays Evgeny Postney who drew in 102 moves with Gabriel Sargissian.

S.P. Sethuraman, too, continued his fine run by scoring over Spain’s Daniel Leal in 43 moves. With six points, Sethuraman plays overnight leader Johnny Hector who lost the top-board battle to Malakhov in just 25 moves.

      Sasikiran wins

Top seed K. Sasikiran jumped to the joint second spot after beating Finland’s Tomi Nyback in 32 moves in the sixth round of the Najdorf memorial tournament at Warsaw.

Sasikiran (3.5 points) is in the company of two other players and follows Polish leader Radoslaw Wojtaszek (4.5).
