A festive presentation of the pieces at Max Euwe Centre in Amsterdam

      De Koning

A festive presentation of the pieces

Max Euwe Centre in Amsterdam hosted on Good Friday a special party to celebrate a unique cultural chess event: The conclusion of a series of 6 Dutch books by Hans Böhm

and Yochanan Afek introducing the chess pieces. Working on this series has lasted six years, a year a piece: Wij presenteren De Pion (2010); De Toren (2011); Het Paard (2012); De Loper (2013); De Toren (2014); De Koningin (2015) and De Koning (2016) published by Tirion and Kosmos.  The special qualities of the piece are promoted in 60 chapters, each displaying four characteristic examples taken from various facets of the game: Classical combinations, games of the greats, chess compositions and curiosities, opening traps and tactical endgames which may be comfortably enjoyed also by those who don’t master the Dutch language. All in all the most creative moves ever played or composed by each piece are presented to chess lovers of all levels and tastes. An historical account of the piece in question over different periods and cultures is an integral part of each volume.

Dutch legend Jan Timman attending the festive presentation was honoured with the first copy of the final volume, De Koning. Other guests of honour were the endgame study expert, Dr. Harold van der Heijden, the historian Leo Diepstraten and the collector of chess art May Kloprogge, all being praised for their considerable contribution to the success of the project.

Here is a small selection of six examples to your enjoyment, a single example (out of 240) per volume:
