Australian chess fan checks in to help mate

      Published Date: 14 November 2009

A man has proved his love for chess by travelling from Australia to take part in the pastime’s first exhibition at Northampton’s museum.

The event will run for 20 days at the museum in Guildhall Road and it is open to all who have an interest in the game.

For Tony Lurie, his enthusiasm for the game meant he left his wife Jean in Noosa, Australia, to take part.

The tournament is being organised by Chess Point Services, whose secretary is Tony Robson.

Mr Lurie, aged 65, said: “Tony Robson is a good friend of mine. He needs my help. He provides the thought and I provide the labour.

“I do have a passion for chess and it is something that is good for the mind.”

Mr Robson, said: “We now have 10 chess points and we are planning to have chess points across the county.

“I played chess as a youngster. Not everybody can sing or play a sport but chess is something practically everybody can play at any age. It brings the community together.

“If you have someone from Australia willing to come and help with the exhibition, who knows how far it will go?

“We are looking to grow our community into the thousands.”

Chess Point is asking people to come along and learn how to play, or receive coaching, at any time during the exhibition.

The next tournament will take place today from 10am to 5pm. For more information and the full list of tournaments, call 07976 254666 or visit www.chesspoint.co.uk.
