Hikaru Nakamura, Ken Podziba, Mayor's Cup, NY City, Rudy Giuliani

(Hikaru Nakamura, me and NY City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. On the back by the podium is my friend Ken Podziba, NY City Sports Commissioner)

This picture is from the 1st NY City Mayor’s Cup (10-player RR) which I organized in May 2001 in Queens, NY, a few months before 9-11.

I invited a number of young talented players to give them a chance for GM and IM norms. IM Irina Krush got her 1st GM norm and Dmitry Schneider got his second IM norm. I also invited IM Eugene Perelshteyn, IM Greg Shahade, IM Amon Simutowe, and a very young IM Hikaru Nakamura who became a GM not long after that.

The veteran GMs who took part in the event were Novikov (tied for 1st with Irina Krush), Yudasin, Blatny and Gruenfeld.
