      World Cup Final

CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE BAKU WORLD CUP 2015. THE PRESENTATION OF THE CHESS OLYMPIAD 2016

The Closing Ceremony of the Baku World Cup 2015 was held October 5 at the Four Seasons Hotel. The Minister of the Youth and Sports had his first word at the event. The Minister said that the event will stay in history not only by high standards of organization, but with a fierce competition: “We all very happy that the participants were happy with the accommodations. We witnessed a noncompromising play in a knockout tournament with 128 participants. The final match was simply fantastic. It is well known that the game of chess is very popular in Azerbaijan, there is a great interest in this sport. The basis of the chess development in our country was founded by Heydar Aliyev. In that time, more than 70 chess schools were opened in the country. Nowadays, our President, Ilham Aliyev, continues to implement the policy of chess development”.
Azad Rahimov noted this is very important for Azerbaijan to hold such chess events like this one:”The spectators were able watch world’s strongest players here. Such events provide a serious input into the development of chess in the country. I was really happy to see how the play of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov at this tournament was admired by the spectators and fans. During one of the days, more than 600 spectators came here to observe the event. I would also like to thank the FIDE executives for providing us with these opportunities to hold such prestigious events. I believe that the Chess Olympiad 2016 will be held at the highest level as well.

The next speaker, the FIDE President, Kirsan Ilumjinov, noted that Baku World Cup 2015 will stay in the history of chess: “Some people say that there are too many draws in chess. But this World Cup was not like this. The final match between Petr Svidler and Sergey Karjakin was historic. Maybe after 100 years we will not see anything like this. We saw a great performance and this final will definitely stay in history. I would like to thank the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, The Ministry of Youth and Sports, Baku Chess Olympiad and the World Cup Organizing Committee for such a high level of organization and accommodation provided.

The President of Azerbaijan Chess Federation, Elman Rustamov, said that the upcoming Chess Olympiad will be special as well. The ACF President provided some information regarding cooperation with FIDE.

The FIDE President presented a World Cup to Sergey Karjakin as well as a check for 96 thousand of US dollars. Petr Svidler, who took the second place, also got a cup as a present.

At the end of the event, the logo for the upcoming Chess Olympiad was presented. Mahir Mamedov, the director of the Baku Chess Olympiad and the World Cup Organizing Committee, said that around 175 countries and 2000 players will participate in the event. Overall, more than 3000 guests will come to Baku for the Chess Olympiad 2016. Mahir Mamedov expressed confidence in the successful organization of the Baku Chess Olympiad 2016 at the highest level.
