Becoming the top young player in the world

      Le Quang Liem, Vietnam

Quang Liem becomes world’s top young chess player

      Last update 04/07/2011 09:02:27 PM (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – According to the July world chess ranking table of the FIDE, Vietnamese chess star Le Quang Liem, jumps up to 27th from the 49th place two months ago. With an Elo rating of 2,715, he stands first on the FIDE under-20 rankings.

The promotion came from Quang Liem’s silver medal at the Capablanca tournament in Cuba and the recent tournament in France.

Quang Liem has also attained the International Super Great Master title for chess players with the Elo rating of over 2700. This is an honorable landmark for any chess player in the world.

The Vietnamese chess star is about to participate in the Dortmund chess competition for International Super Great Master title holders from July 19 to August 1 in Germany. Last year, Liem ranked second at this event.

After the Dortmund event, he will join the World Cup in Russia.

Liem talked with Tuoi Tre Daily

Are you surprised with the ranking FIDE announced today?

I feel happy at hearing the news though I predicted the result around a month ago. It’s like an official recognition by the world of my efforts in the past.

Do you think you can even get more progress soon?

Promotion on FIDE rankings means of course a progress in my profession. It gives me a motivation to strive for more achievements in the future. The way is still long.

Generally, I really feel happy with the top position on the world’s under-20 ranking table. It is a reward for outstanding player.

      How is your training now?

After deciding to delay my banking studies at the Saigon University, I devote all of my working time for chess studies. I work at home to prepare for World Cup and the elite chess tournament Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in Germany from July 19 to August 1.

Now I am seeking a chess trainer to help me improve.

Three top ranking positions on the latest list belong to Magnus Carlsen of Norway with an Elo rating of 2,821, Viswanathan Anand of India (2,817), and Levon Aronian of Armenia (2,805).

I wish Quang Liem good luck. It is about time that the International Chess Scene is enriched by a Vietnamese Super Chess Grandmaster.

He’s very good, but two kids that are younger already passed him on the live rating list. Caruana (almost 19) and Giri (Just turned 17) who just won the Dutch Championship with a 2848 TPR.

FIDE should allow the participation of the Rest of the World team at Ningbo world team championships. My team as follows
        1. Magnus Carlson
        2. Fabiano Caruna
        3. Anish Giri
        4. Le Quang Leim
        5. Wesley So
Note: Maxim Vachier Lagrave was my second choice. But France most probably will be the stand-by team.
And the reserve players are Radoslav Woj, George Meir, Victor Laznica etc.
A veteran team with Topalov, Shirov, Adams, Kasimdizhanov & Linear Perez Dominiguz can also be considered
