BUDDING young chess masters are set to show off their board skills tomorrow, with the 25th staging of the Borders Primary Schools Chess Competition.
Held every year at the Focus Centre in Galashiels, and organised by Tom Lawson, this year’s event will see players from 18 local schools battling out to be named ‘best on the boards’.
The contest starts at 9.30am, with the prize-giving ceremony to take place at around 3pm.
However, one disappointing aspect to this year’s chess contest is that it may well be the last for its founding organiser, Mr Lawson, who says he feels it is time he stepped down after a quarter of a century.
“I am 73 years old now and I think it’s maybe time after this one for me to call it a day,” he said.
“The only thing is I can’t get anyone interested enough to take over the contest’s organisation,” added Mr Lawson, who also gives up more of his free time to travel round Borders schools teaching chess.
“Hopefully, someone will come forward who will be able to take over the organising of the contest because after 25 years, it would be a real shame if it was not able to continue.”
