Breaking News: Carlsen – Anand World Championship 2014 in Sochi!

Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Sochi, World Championship

Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand will play the World Championship Match in November in Sochi, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced at the press conference with Interfax.

The Match will take place from 7 to 28 November at the Olympic Village in Sochi. The budget is 3 million USD.

ITAR-TASS states that both players agreed with this solution.

The RCF President Andrei Filatov confirmed that the federation will participate in the organization of the event.

Magnus Carlsen became the World Champion last November by defeating Viswanathan Anand in Chennai, but the Indian bounced back and earned a rematch by winning the Candidates Tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Espen Agdestein, manager of Magnus Carlsen, said for Dagbladet that “there was nothing wrong with Sochi”. The city hosted the Winter Olympics and even Carlsen was there to follow biathlon competitions.

Regarding the world politics, Agdestein added that he contacted the Norwegian Foreign Ministry and currently there is no question of any sports boycott.

I’m sure Kasparov will try to derail this for publicity.

The very same people who have vigorously denounce the current FIDE administration for failing to come up with a World Championship Match will now denounce this arrangement as unworkable, unjust, and not worth supporting.

        lol.

This news is nonsense. Nakamura will demolish this two in a simul blindfolded. Who cares where they play? Nakamura is the legitimate champion.

Magnus and Vishy ought to refuse to play. The process has been a sad joke and hopefully will mark an end to a corrupt and incompetent administration. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s use of his own money and contacts with corrupt politicians has provided a series of short term fixes like this, that have left top-tier chess without any sustainable sources of funding. Take your pick of the worst-run world sporting body: FIDE, FIFA or IOC? Sorry FIFA and IOC, you’re not even close.

Or for Gods sake, better for both Carlsen and Anand to play their rematch in Mosul, Iraq. Its free there, lots of media covering and very exciting finals… live tv coverage and live bullets… and they can rest inside bunkers and tanks. Just play chess regardless where it is held, under water, space, war zone… just play

rocketboy.. show me $3M and then we can talk.. Atleast the two are worthy contenders. Remeber Kassparov handpicked his opponent so as to deny shirov.. My only sad note is magnus deserves to be treated better IN HIS OWN COUNTRY.. they should have bid.. not ONE sponsor?

chessbase site says 1 to 1.5 M of the 3M would be the prize money. What? 2 out of 3M goes where?

If Norway does not give a damn about Magnus Carlsen, he should consider transfering federation. Perhaps to US Chess federation so that Carlsen can join Nakamura under a US flag. Kamsky is about to retire, US badly needs a fresh elite player lol Oh well, not bad Carlsen, Nakamura and So bwhahaha
