There were nearly 30 people in Lourdes High School’s room 200 on Saturday, but the only sound that could be heard was the intermittent clicking of the chess timer and the occasional sigh.
That’s because there was a lot at stake; as all four Rochester high schools competed in the Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League (RASCL) annual City Cup Tournament.
And it turned out to be quite a day.
The second-seeded Century team took the title for the fourth time in six years, but it wasn’t easy.
A last-minute checkmate by Century senior captain David Weber propelled the Panthers to a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded John Marshall in the cup title.
John Marshall surprised the undefeated and RASCL season champion Lourdes team in the semifinals earlier in the day by a 3.5-1.5 score.
Lourdes finished third after defeating Mayo 5-0 in the consolation match.
Michael Lust is a junior at Century. He has been playing chess since he was five years old, and so far this season he is undefeated.
His favorite part about chess is “the combination of moves,” that make up the game.
“It’s also a good way to hang out with friends and work on your skills,” he said.
