Alex Ivanov of Newton and Robert Perez, undergrad at M.I.T. in Cambridge, tied for first in the 250-player 82nd Mass. Open in 11 rated sections. There were 219 players, according to the USCF, when the scholastic and blitz side events were tabulated. Andrew Liu of Westboro tied for third with three others at the three-day event in Marlboro.
You can see all the results at www.masschess.org, but we’ll list the other 10 section winners. Yoon-Young Kim of R.I. won the Under-2100 group, David Canning of Newton the Under-1800 section, and Jason Wang, 10, of Northboro took under-1500 section honors in the bottom of the three-day sections.
The six scholastic sections were single day, and Ian Youth of Maine, Brian Reidy of Westwood, Luke Randolph of Jamaica Plain, Amrit Subramanian of Acton, Brian Yin of Natick and Derek Zhao of Westford finished clear first, except for one blitz playoff, where Subramanian won over newcomer, Eric Stevens of Oxford, both having perfect 4-0 scores.
In all, there were 22 unrated/new scholastic players out of 109 in the one-day scholastic groups. Vadim Martirosov of Allston took the 19-player, 10-round blitz event, now part of the overall rating report. Note the rating changes with the new K factors used by the USCF. Nathan Smolensky of Brookline became the new president of MACA, and will chair his first board meeting of the 2013-14 year next Sunday in Natick.
Igor Foygel of Brookline and Lawyer Times of Hyde Park tied for first in the Metrowest Chess Club’s 78-player 30th anniversary open. Results, games and photos are at www.metrowestchess.org.

Franc Guadalupe of Houston, Texas, is the new interim executive director for the U.S. Chess Federation, and a nationwide search for a long-term one is ongoing, with a June 30 deadline for applications. The U.S. Junior Closed, a 10-player invitational, will begin June 13 in St. Louis.
After 8 of 11 rounds at the www.fide.com 4th Grand Prix in Greece that ends tomorrow, Gata Kamsky of New York held a slim lead. Great coverage at many sites, such as www.chessbase.com, as well as the World Chess Association/FIDE. There are “two and a half” American representatives in the 12-player field, as Fabiano Caruana of Italy has dual citizenship with the U.S., but is listed under the flag of Italy.
Pick of the week at www.chesscafe.com is IM John Donaldson’s three book reviews posted Thursday. Not only does he review and give a history of “Chess Informant,” dating back to 1966, but reviews both volume 116, and the fourth edition of the “Encyclopedia of Chess Combinations,” both with figurine algebraic notation. He also reviews the DVD version of Inside Chess, 1988-2000, a publication of which he was a key staff member member.
