      Fiji

Top local players to conduct chess coaching clinic
      Arin Kumar
      Saturday, February 09, 2013

THE Fiji Chess Federation will begin the re-introduced chess clinics from tomorrow.

FCF announced the clinics are open to members of the public and will be conducted by FIDE ranked players like Gloria Sukhu, Candidate Master Calvin Prasad, Rajiv Raj, Goru Arvind and CM Manoj Kumar.

Kumar, a former national champion, said the coaching session would be a mix of theory and practical games.

“Chess is a logical game that needs heaps of practice, just like mathematics,” he said.

“The best thing about chess is that you only need to invest less than $20 on a standard chess set, meaning that anyone with a little interest can afford to enjoy chess.”

Federation general secretary Goru Arvind says FCF hopes to see primary, secondary and tertiary students attend the coaching sessions in large numbers since there is a long-term initiative to develop younger players for competitive tournaments.

“13-year-old Kabrina Terubea managed to win three games in a row at the 2012 Chess Olympiad in Istanbul after learning from similar sessions.

“Fiji hosting the 2013 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship from May 4 to 11 is big news in the international arena, especially for a sporting body that funds most trips from the savings of local athletes,” he said.

The first session will be from 3pm to 5pm at the Nasese Medical Centre in Suva.
