Mabvuku to host chess festival
Mabvuku High school will this month host a chess festival after so many years of not hosting. This will be a schools teams tournament which will feature both primary and secondary schools in a bid to spread the game and improve it from the tender ages to secondary schools which are now a bit mature in their abstract thinking. The teams will be composed of four players and the affiliation fees will be $25 for a team of four players.
The 11th of July is the date for the much awaited tourney and it will kick start at 0900, so teams should arrive before the mentioned time for registration and the pairings to be done in accordance with the programme. This will be a five round swiss pairing tournament. There will be some team prizes as well as individual prizes for the best players on boards one to four in each category. Meanwhile some Zimbabweans taking part in the South Africa Open are doing well our own Daud Amin will be playing the seasoned Grand Master Nigel Short of England. IM Makoto Rodwell, Spencer Masango and Reuben Salimu are the Zimbabweans taking part. On the other hand the Zambian contigent is led by IM Stanley Chumfwa and IM Bwalya Gillian.
This tournament is one of Africa’s best tournaments as well as strongest in terms of strength as it usually pits more Grand Masters who will be playing not forgetting the seasoned International Masters. Hoping that our very own Makoto who won it in 2012 will be able to repeat the feat. He however admitted that this time the tournament is very tough with many Grand Masters taking part in this coveted and most paying tournament in Africa as well as the most sponsored of all the tournaments in Africa.
Wiull keep you posted of the developments. Meanwhile on the local scene Lewis Kahoba scooped the Gweru grand prix with 6 points out of seven rounds beating CM Dion Moyo on bucholtz. Castro Sibanda had 5,5 points. It was Kahoba’s first Grand Prix and this shows how the youngman is maturing in the game as he has gained some Elo points in the rated tournaments to earn himself a rating in 2000+.
