      Chess Foundation host tournament

      Trinidad and Tobago

      Chess Foundation host tournament
      Thursday, March 29 2012

THE Chess Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago start their 2012 season with a one-day Rapid Play tournament from 9am at Bishop Anstey High School, tomorrow.

The event is being sponsored by Agostini Insurance Brokers Limited and will consist of four categories inclusive of a Girls Division for the first time.

The other categories are Novice, Under-1200 rated division, Under-1400 and U-1800.

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Foundation (TTCF), Edison Raphael explained that the reason for including a girls’ division is to increase the participation of females in the sport.

Presently the chess foundation has an active chess programme at the nation’s schools designed to target girls.

Raphael feels the sport will be improved with the increase in the amount of women taking part, as girls dominated the AIB contest recently.

The girls will play a seven-round Swiss contest while the other categories will take part in a five-round competition. At stake is a $1,000 and as well as trophies and medals for the top 10 players in each division.

This opening tournament will be followed by a series of monthly contests that will culminate with a five-day Caribbean Chess Carnival and International Junior Chess tournament on August 2-5 at Queen’s Royal College.
